The talk will give a personal view of what would be a good PhD student and researcher. The target audience could be current PhD students, supervisors, and potential postgraduate students for PhD. After reviewing the history of PhD (philosopher doctor) including where it comes from and why it is named, the talk will take the examples of engineering doctorial research to highlight the following.
What a potential or current student for PhD should do
How one could be a good PhD (such as in thermofluids area)
General rule and methodologies
Good characters
What one should learn during the PhD
报告人简介:
Professor Yuying Yan who obtained his PhD in Mechanical Engineering at City University of London is Professor of Thermofluids Engineering, Li Dak Sum Chair Professor in Thermofluids Engineering at University of Nottingham. He is also the Faculty Lead and member of the University Global Engagement Committee. With more than 30-year experience in fluid flow and heat transfer, he is a member of EPSRC Peer Review College and European Advanced Research Grant Panel. He is an Associate Editor of Elsevier Journal - Case Studies of Thermal Engineering, Editorial Board member for International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, Nature Publishing Group's multidisciplinary Journal: Scientific Reports, Journal of Bionic Engineering, Elsevier Journal of Thermal Science and Engineering Progress, and Springer Journal of Automotive Innovation, etc. He is fellow of International Society of Bionic Engineering. He has supervised more than 30 PhD students and authored or co-authored more than 200 academic papers in refereed journals. He gives more than 60 invited keynotes talks at International conferences and workshops in the past few years.
